Performance Practice Project: U2 live at Glastonbury 2011

U2 were one of the headlines at Glastonbury and filmed by the BBC there will be one of the best filmings of a live performance there will be available.

0 - 29 seconds (before vocals) -
  • There's a clear establishing shot - extreme long shot - which sets the scene for the audience which is a massive festival with extremely large crowds waiting for the same performance
  • The camera introduces each member of the band to the camera individually as they begin to start playing, starting with the first guitarist, then the drummer, second guitarist, whole band, and then closing in on Bono (the singer) as the vocals begin.
Close ups of Bono are perfectly framed, with the actual microphone ball the focus of the shot. This is good because it is a live performance therefore framing  would be very difficult.

This is my favourite camera shot used. This is because it is filmed from the POV of a crowd member in the audience. I think this is important because the audience who will see this live performance filming are the people at home who aren't at the festival. Therefore I think this shot helps these people feel like they are within the crowd, get a vibe of what it is like and not feel like they are missing out at all.

The editing used in the video includes transitions which shows the change in tempo of the song. This works well as it highlights the change.

Although the BBC had to manage with producing this with a live audience and we don't need to do this, they did need to consider their audience at all times in order to keep them engaged in the video which is what we always need to consider.
